Saturday, May 18

  • Madison
    Joe Wheeler Century. 103 miles, 17-19mph pace, 7 AM. Several hills between mile 40 and 70 on the century. Shorter 85 and 68 mile options are possible. Ride starts from Madison Gazebo. For more information contact Jean Jasinczuk (256)772-7915.

Sunday, May 19

  • Springfield
    Springville – Ashville Romp. 20 to 55 moderately paced miles, 9:30 AM. Ride starts from the Springville High School, Springville, Al. Join ACTS  for a low traffic cruise among the pastures and farmlands of central Alabama. Schedule rest stop in Ashville. Map and cue sheets of mileage options. Route is part of ACTS century training route. For more information call (205)664-3669. From Birmingham: take I-59 north to exit 154, left onto Al 174, follow Al 174 0.8 mile to US 11. Turn right on US 11, high school in approx. .6 miles on left.

Sunday, May 26

  • Chelsea
    Historical 280 Review. 22 miles, 4 PM. Meet at Chelsea Grade School. Ride will be an out and back mostly on old US 280 (the old two lane road that the present day four lane US-280 replaced). This is a fairly flat, low traffic ride suitable for all riders. Since it is an out and back, riders who want less than 22 miles can turn around and head back at any point along the route. One rest stop. To get to the ride start from Birmingham: from US 280 East turn right onto Shelby Co. 47. Go approximately 1 mile then turn right onto Shelby Co. 39. Chelsea Grade School is on the left about 0.2 miles or so from the turn. For more information contact  Buddy Heerten (205)991-6154.
  • Columbiana
    Chip's Ride. 40 miles for experienced riders, 8 AM. Meet at Shelby County High School in Columbiana. Some hills. Fast paced ride. No map. Good training ride for stronger riders. To get to the ride start from Birmingham: take US 280 east to Shelby Co. 47. Take 47 south to Columbiana and turn left onto College Ave. at traffic light. Saturday, June 1

  • Chelsea
    Kathy's Going to Wisconsin via Chelsea. 24 miles, 9 AM. Ride starts from Chelsea Grade School. Kathy's bye ride before she heads north till July. A pleasant ride with nice country roads and relatively low traffic. One, maybe two rest stops. Shortcut option for those wanting fewer miles. Map provided. Intended pace around 15 mph give or take. Faster riders welcome but I'd rather you rode with me! Kathy will tell you stories about the cool summer days (with no humidity) back home, and how flat the terrain is! Ride will be led from the back. Rain will cancel the ride, call if questionable. To get to the ride start from Birmingham: from US 280 East turn right onto Shelby Co. 47. Go approximately 1 mile then turn right onto Shelby Co. 39. Chelsea Grade School is on the left about 0.2 miles or so from the turn. For more information contact Kathy Troup (205)970-0935.

Sunday, June 2

  • Harpersville
    Doubles. 60 & 44 miles, 8 AM. Two different rides. 
    Dual-Distance. Ride #1. Meet at the Harpersville Post Office at 8 AM a.m for 60 miles through Shelby and Talledega counties. The Harpersville Post Office is 1 block south of US280 & 1 block east of AL25 in Harpersville. This ride will meet the riders for the next ride.
    Ride #2. Meet at the Vincent Hi-School on US231 in Vincent at 9:15 AM for a 44 mile ride through Shelby and Talledega counties. Except for the 16 miles at the beginning of the previous ride and the 2 miles or so at the end where these rides split, these two rides are identical. Lunch at Ritchey's Barbecue (they've just built a new restaurant!) afterwards. To get to the ride start from Birngham: take U.S. 280 East to Harpersville. Look for the post office at the intersection of AL 25 and US 280. It's hidden behind the gas station! Go south on Al 25 and take the first left.   • Pelham
    Hills of Pelham. 21 miles, for experienced riders 8 AM. Scenic overlooks and screaming down hills through expensive real estate. Significant climbing to enable both. Not for the hill avoidant!! "Expert" classification is primarily because of terrain, not speed. No rest stops but riders will regroup as necessary. Several options for additional mileage at end. Meet at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, Pelham. To get to the ride start from Birmingham: take I-65 to Cahaba Valley Road, Exit 246. Go west 100 yards and turn south (Left) onto State Park Road. Take next right onto Amphitheater Road. Go past Amphitheater and park in public lot next to Pelham Civic Center. For more information contact Maggie Amsler (205)663-8958.

June 8-15

  • Dauphin Island - Daviston
    BAMA 2001 - The LA (Lower Alabama)  [info] [register]. Multi-day, family oriented event. Ride changes route every year. This year the LA Ride begins in the town Dauphin Island and heads to Gulf Shores. Ride ends in Horseshoe Bend State Park in Daviston. Last year the ride was limited to the 200 registrants.   • Oak Mountain State Park
    Oak Mountain Bike Lane Spin. 16 to 32 leisurely miles, 8 AM. Bike Clinic starts at 8 AM, ride starts at 8:30 AM. Group ride, cyclists will ride as group, waiting at major turns for regroup. The ride will be on the public road in and around the park but will be road, hybrid and mountain bike friendly. For more information call (205) 664-3669. From Birmingham take I-65 south to the Cahaba Valley Rd exit (Hwy 119). Exit ride right onto Hwy 119 and turn left at 1st stop light onto State Park Road. Follow State Park Road to main entrance. Ride will start from the golf center parking lot off John Findlay Drive. Please park in gravel parking lot to the left of the main clubhouse parking lot. Entry fee to park $2.

Sunday, June 23

  • Fairhope
    Alabama Sports Festival (ASF) Olympic Torch Ride [info]
    20 mile fun ride and 62 mile metric century ride, flat to rolling hill miles, 7 AM. Be part of this fun ride. The ASF torch will be carried and staged at different points throughout the ride. Scenic ride along flat area of historic Mobile Bay and then on to rolling hills and back to the water view. Refreshment stops and support vehicles will be on the course. Thursday, July 4

  • Decatur
    Spirit of America Annual Metric [info] [registration]. 25, 35, 62, and 100 miles. Ride will start at the T. C. Almon Center at Point Mallard Park in Decatur. Registrants after June 15th are not guaranteed a T-shirt. Proceeds of this ride will go towards the Spirit of America Festival. Reported special guests for this year's festival include:
    • Daniel Nigro, the Fire Chief of New York City
    • Joseph Esposito, the Police Chief of New York City
    • Lisa Beamer, wife of Todd Beamer who was one of the passengers on hijacked Flight 93 that prevented the hijacked plane from reaching it's destination
    • Shannon Spann, wife of Johnny "Mike" Spann, the Winfield, AL native and CIA Operative killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan .

  • Birmingham
    A.C.T.S. Group OMSP Saturday Ride [info]. Held 1st & 3rd Saturday of the month. 16-32 rolling hill miles for riders of all skill levels, 9:30 AM. Bike clinic is held at 9 AM. Starts at Oak Mountain State Park (park entry fee $2). Group ride (cyclist will ride as group, waiting at major turns for regroup. The ride will be on the public road in and around the park but will be road, hybrid and mountain bike friendly. This ride is designed to provide the new cyclist and those returning to the sport the opportunity to feel comfortable when riding with a group on public roads. The cyclist will be introduced to group riding etiquette and techniques. Approved helmets required. From Birmingham take I-65 south to the Cahaba Valley Rd exit (Hwy 119). Exit ride right onto Hwy 119 and turn left at 1st stop light onto State Park Road. Follow State Park Road to main entrance. Ride will start from the golf center parking lot off John Findlay Drive.
